This compact camcorder is 56.4 mm in height, 53.9 mm in width, and 119mm in length; it carries only 270g weight without a battery and memory card. The users would surely like the lightweight feel and handy design; on the other hand, others may get worried that it would break easily. Then, let me tell you that the camera is light in weight but sturdy and stable enough to use for an extended time. But, you need to handle it safely and keep it in a dry place as it has no shockproof or waterproof construction.
It has arrived with a manual lens cover to enhance the protection. Before starting the video recording, you have to hit the switch located at the side of the unit to remove the lens cover. There is also a recording button at the top of the camera body, which allows you to take still photos. The LCD display is not touch-friendly like other camcorders; so, you’ll have to use the toggle buttons for navigating zoom, focus and other camera settings.
As manual control functions, the camcorder incorporates some dedicated buttons for controlling the recording functions, selecting the recording modes, and sharing the files with one touch. Here, you will get time-lapse recording mode and some preset scene modes like portrait, sports, food, beach & snow, waterfall, and automatic mode. If you enable the auto mode, it will automatically select the respective present setting for Landscape, Portrait, Indoor, Outdoor, White, and Night.
The pause button lets you pause the recording and resume the recording within the same file. The one-touch sharing button comes in handy while live streaming videos on YouTube, Facebook, or other social networking sites.
It does not have a dedicated image stabilization mechanism or built-in filters, but it offers some special filter effects like sepia, negative, western, black, and white. The camcorder also lets you add background music with footage without using any editing software.
It has a side-mounted 2.7-inch wide LCD screen that can be rotated at a 270-degree angle and tilted at up to a 90-degree. The rotatable liquid-crystal display is very useful for self filmmakers and vloggers.
The 230,000 dot display screen provides a bright preview of the recordings even under bright daylight.
This Samsung 52x optical zoom HD camcorder can digitally zoom up to 130X when used with a digital extender. The in-built lens shows a full-frame focal range of 35.3 to 229.8 mm. The lens can bring the subject close to you, while the fast maximum aperture ensures the best quality images in low light conditions.
The Samsung F90 HD camcorder has a 1/3” large 5 megapixels resolution CMOS image sensor that ensures sharp and bright image quality all the time.
Image and video quality
Unfortunately, the camcorder can’t shoot video in full HD resolution; but it records video in 720P and 480P with the highest clarity. In my opinion, (1280 x 720) HD resolution at 30P and (720x480) resolution at 60P is enough for making home videos or vlogging. The 480P and 720P resolution videos can also be viewed on a much large screen.
Samsung HMX F90 camcorder takes 1.9 megapixels still photos in JPEG format. You will get 1696×954 pixels resolution for 16:9 aspect ratio images and 1600×1200 pixels resolution for 4:3 aspect ratio images.
STORAGE
The Samsung HMX-F90 comes with a detachable battery, the Samsung IA-BP105R. The included IA-BP105R battery offers 1.5 hours shooting time; plus, it can be charged in-camera while using it via USB charging.
Battery life will depend on the resolution with which you record the videos. If you record high-quality video, it will consume more power, and the battery will last for less time.
The camcorder has a single media slot that supports SD, SDHC, or SDXC memory cards with maximum storage capacity.
Connectivity and Compatibility
You can view the recorded video files on your HD TV or large screen by using the HDMI cable. The camcorder has a type-D micro HDMI port and a 2.0 Type-A USB port that lets you connect it to your laptop or computer for transferring video files or recharging the battery.
It has a 1/4-inch tripod mounting thread, so you don’t need to be worried about the absence of an image stabilization mechanism; because nothing will give you more stability than a tripod.
