The Best Canon Lenses Review 2021

Canon, a Japan MNC started in 1937, is still one of the leading camera gear manufacturers in the market. So, if you already own any Canon DSLR or mirrorless camera, it means you have taken a serious step towards your photography career.

However, having a Canon camera alone in hand is of no use. You'll have to pair with the right lens.

But this task is not very easy as each one of you will be interested in a particular type of photography, and selecting a lens to suit your shooting style is a little tedious.

That is why I have categorized a list of Canon camera lenses based on the lens type: Fast prime (Portrait lens), Macro, Telephoto, Wide-angle, and standard zoom. You only have to go through the content and select the one that seems best for you. That's it!

I hope you find this article interesting and informative. With that said, let us jump to the list.

BEST CANON LENSES BASED ON LENS TYPE

FAST PRIME LENS

CANON EF 50MM F/1.8 STM

PRODUCT DETAILS:

  • 7 rounded aperture blades for giving a pleasing bokeh.
  • Sensor format: Full-frame/EF
  • Front filter thread measures 49mm.
  • Shows a minimum focusing distance of 35cm.
  • STM motor technology
  • Electronically coupled diaphragm.
  • Maximum magnification of 0.21x
  • Weighs 160g.

FEATURES:

You are guaranteed perfect bokeh shots and background blur with this tiny and affordable lens. It will cost you around 125$, and for this price point, it has several surprising features.  You will find these lenses always on demand in e-commerce sites because of the lens' performance.

You can use it for both your Full-frame and APS-C Canon cameras. However, this full-frame 50mm Canon lens will give a focal length equivalent of 75mm in the case of an APS-C camera.

DESIGN:

This lens is a successor model of the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II version. When comparing these two lenses, the build quality seems to change. The former had a plastic lens mount, so though this Mark II version showed an amazing performance, people still wanted a more durable lens.

That is why the Company decided to launch this CANON EF 50MM F/1.8 STM model. Photographers find this lens more durable because it is completely made of metal, including its lens mount.

Also, this lens has better handling. For instance, if you switch the lens to AF mode, even if you focus manually with the camera's shutter button half-pressed, the focus ring won't move.

Moving on, the lens has the most desirable AF motor, which is the Stepper motor. So you are guaranteed a fast, accurate, and less noisy autofocusing.

PERFORMANCE:

If you are someone interested in shooting in low-lights, then this is an absolute jumbo in it. Yes, the aperture of f/1.8 is so wide that it captures the maximum possible light even in darker situations making your dim shots look brighter.

ABOUT FOCAL LENGTH:

50mm, who doesn’t crave for it. Professionals always look for this nifty-fifty focal range because it sits in between wide-angle and telephoto. So, you can almost capture anything with this lens. Be it portrait shots, landscapes, wedding photography, or anything. You will get an instant cinematic feel while photographing with this lens on your Canon camera.

I also call this as the best Canon portrait lens because, at f/1.8, you get that natural dark corners with good center sharpness. This makes my portrait shots even better. However, those who wish corner-to-corner sharpness can use this lens between f/4 - f/5.6 to get your results. Though there are many
low-light lenses for Canon cameras, my go-to product is this EF 50mm f/1.8 STM.

Also, if you like to explore shallow depth of field techniques, this could be one of the best
Canon bokeh lenses you could ever have. The only feature I wish I could have added to this is the image stabilizer. However, for 125 $, it’s loaded with more than enough features, so I don’t consider this a flaw.

What I liked about this lens:

  • Gives perfect out-of-focus background effects, making it useful for portraiture.
  • Ability to use in low-lights.
  • Very affordable
  • Focus ring is very smooth and electronically coupled to the focusing motor
  • Compact
  • Perfect zooming (no jerks) while shooting videos.
  • Chromatic aberrations are very minimal with the lens.

STANDARD ZOOM  LENS

CANON EF 24-70MM F/2.8L II USM

PRODUCT DETAILS:

  • Sensor format: Full- Frame
  • Aperture range : f/2.8-22
  • 9 rounded aperture blades
  • Internal focusing mechanism
  • Front filter thread measures 82mm.
  • Weather sealed design

FEATURES:

A very professional lens that will take your photography career to the next level. It has a very good focal range ranging from wide-angle 24mm to short-telephoto focal length of 70mm.

DESIGN:

It is the updated version of Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L. The older one weighed 910g and was also bulkier. However, this size has now been reduced by the introduction of the Mark II version. This successor model is also big and heavy (805 g), but it is comparatively light when comparing it with its elder brother. I liked the build quality of this lens. The plastic used in the lens's construction doesn't feel cheap but instead is very solid.

The only drawback I see in this lens is the absence of image stabilization. Well, to speak about the autofocus design of this lens, it has got a Ring-type USM which is considered another best AF motor for lenses. It is responsible for delivering that fast and accurate AF performance.

PERFORMANCE:

I was looking for a
good lens for a Canon T3i camera and I'm glad I found one. Many might have a doubt whether this full-frame lens will work on a APS-C Canon camera. Well, you can use a Full-frame lens on an APS-C Camera provided you consider the crop factor (1.5x for Canon). The gives me a full-frame dynamic focal range of 36 - 105mm, which is helpful for general-purpose photo shoots.

The f/2.8 is responsible for the lens's two best qualities: Bokeh quality and nighttime performance. I'll tell you how. At f/2.8, you get that nice out-of-focus blur, so your subjects remain tack sharp, giving a realistic feel. And how it excels in low-light is the wide-aperture allows a lot of light to enter the sensor, making it useful for indoor still photography or video shoots.

Also, the f/2.8 allows you to get faster shutter speeds in low-light, so you don't have to worry about any image blur. Overall it is one of the
top walk-around Canon lenses in the market! Buy one if you liked its features.

What I liked about this lens:

  • It is great for photo journalism and wedding photography.
  • Useful in dimly lit conditions and night photography.
  • Versatile
  • Excellent build quality
  • Can be used in harsh weather conditions

TELEPHOTO LENS

CANON EF 70-200MM F/2.8L USM III

PRODUCT DETAILS:

  • Full-Frame equivalent focal range: 112-320mm.
  • Both zooming and focusing is internal.
  • Comes with ETA - T7 lens hood.
  • Front filter thread measures 77mm.
  • Has a distance scale on the lens barrel.
  • Features a zoom ring lock switch.
  • Dust and splash resistant.
  • Image stabilization: Yes

FEATURES:

My favorite lens in this list is the “Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM III”. It is a great wildlife and sports lens for Canon cameras. It has 4-stop image stabilization, so you don’t have to worry about getting shaky videos with the lens. Also, while working in low-light indoor sports shoots, you can capture pictures at slower shutter speeds and less ISO. Thanks to the Image stabilization feature!.

DESIGN:

As it is a telephoto lens, it is heavy. It weighs around 1500g, but thankfully, this lens comes with a tripod mount, helping you have a good grip while holding the lens. Like the 24-70mm f/2.8 L II, this also has a ring-type USM for delivering fast and reliable AF data. Even manual focusing is fun with this lens because the focus ring turns very smoothly without showing any stickiness.

PERFORMANCE:

This is one of my favorite
long range Canon sports lenses because it can track fast-moving objects accurately. This is one of the crucial features needed in a good sports lens.

Moving on, the image quality of this lens is splendid throughout its zoom range. You will not see a drop in contrast even at lower focal lengths. In terms of bokeh, there are 8 aperture blades to give you that perfect bokeh effect (defocusing effects). Also, I noticed that the lens has almost negligible chromatic aberration, thanks to the special glasses and coatings inside the lens.

What I liked about this lens:

  • Great for concert, wedding, sports, wildlife and other travel photography.
  • The image stabilization is rock steady.
  • Durable build quality.
  • Great for video work as it has an internal zoom.
  • Amazing bokeh quality.

WIDE-ANGLE LENS

CANON EF-S 10-18MM F/4.5-5.6 IS STM LENS

PRODUCT DETAILS:

  • Sensor format: APS-C
  • Aperture range: f/4.5-22 / f/5.6-29
  • 7 rounded diaphragm blades
  • Front filter thread measures 67mm.
  • Shows a minimum focusing distance of 22cm.
  • Image stabilization: Yes

FEATURES:

Suppose you have any of the Canon APS-C cameras and are looking for the best wide-angle lenses for it. Then this is for you. As said, this is a crop-sensor lens, so you can't use it with an EF Camera. It is branded as one of the most sought-after Canon lenses for making videos because the focal length gets most of the scene covered in the frame.

DESIGN:

Another reason why I claim this to be suitable for videographers is that the zoom ring is so smooth, and it glides very easily with your fingers. Adding to this, the STM motor takes the AF performance of this lens to the next level. I tested it with my Canon 80d, and I could hardly hear any noise while AF.

We spoke about the zoom ring, but what about the focus ring. Wait, I'm coming to that. Even the focus ring rotates smoothly and one point to be noticed here is it is electronically coupled to the lens's AF motor.

PERFORMANCE:

Love taking family portraits? I'm sure you will love using wide-angle
Canon lenses for family portraits then. It is so wide that it can fit your large family of around even up to 15-20 people in a single frame. So cherish your wedding memories by taking entire family group shots with this lens.

Not only do family portraits say you're in a tight space or want a broader picture of good natural scenery, but this lens will also help you get that done. Though it looks small and also less pricey still it will stun you with its impressive image quality. The colors are rich, and distortion, vignette, lens flare are very minimal with this lens. You can easily correct the issues post-production as they are almost negligible.

Videomakers should also try this lens for its amazing steady image stabilization. You will not notice any camera shakes as the lens has a 4-stop camera correction system.

What I liked about this lens:

  • Fit and finish of the lens is excellent.
  • No focus breathing issues.
  • Allows for full-time manual focus and also the focusing is internal.
  • Corners are very sharp and show a good contrast.
  • Great for building, landscape and real estate photography.

MACRO LENS

CANON EF 100MM F/2.8L IS USM MACRO LENS

PRODUCT DETAILS:

  • Sensor format: APS-C
  • Aperture range: f/4.5-22 / f/5.6-29
  • 7 rounded diaphragm blades
  • Front filter thread measures 67mm.
  • Shows a minimum focusing distance of 22cm.
  • Image stabilization: Yes

FEATURES:

Do you own a Canon full-frame /APS-C camera and looking for a Canon lens for macro photography? In that case this Canon EF 100MM F/2.8L lens will be the best choice ever. Apart from giving you the macro ability, it has many other features like 4-stop image stabilization, wide-aperture, weather resistance, and a lot more.

DESIGN:

The lens is unique in terms of its IS. Yes, unlike the previous one that shows a single axis stabilization, this lens’s IS feature is a hybrid type. Which means it will give you both latitudinal and longitudinal stabilization. It is made of high-quality plastic, making the lens comparatively less in weight.

The front filter thread doesn’t move while focusing, which means you can use your ND filters without any worries. You can use the lens amidst rain, snow, and hot temperatures as it has a weather sealed design. Moving on, the lens has ring-type autofocus, which gives a very quiet AF. In terms of AF speed, it is moderate.

PERFORMANCE:

The minimum focus distance of 30cm allows you to get really close to the subject and still receive a 1:1 magnification. The lens has a higher focal range of 100mm, and when this combines with the f/2.8 wide aperture, you could take portrait and landscape shots with good background compression.

In terms of image sharpness at wide apertures, the center sharpness is excellent, while the corners look slightly off. In contrast, at narrower apertures, both the corners and the center look impressively sharp.

What I liked about this lens:

  • Very sharp
  • Can be used in dimly-lit conditions.
  • The zoom ring is large and also turns smoothly.
  • Hybrid AF-system.

CANON LENS FORMATS

Canon EF-S lenses

If the lens you purchase or already own shows an EF-S tag on it. It is designed specifically for Canon’s crop-sensor APS-C cameras. You cannot use an EF-S lens on a full-frame camera system.

Canon EF lenses

If the Canon lens has an EF tag on it, it is designed for Canon’s Full-Frame cameras. In an EF mount system, the lens gets electronically attached to the camera body. If you ask whether an EF lens is compatible with an APS-C Canon camera, the answer is Yes.

You can mount an EF lens onto an APS-C system, provided you consider the crop factor of 1.5x. Also, you can connect an EF lens to a Canon EOS-M mirrorless interchangeable camera, provided you have an EF to EOS M mount adapter.

canon

Canon EF-M lenses

An EF-M tag on a Canon lens designates that it is designed for EF-M mount cameras. If you take an EF-M mount lens and compare its size with an EF or EF-S lens, you will notice that an EF-M is much more lightweight.

Canon RF lenses

Canon uses two new systems in its mirrorless camera lineup. One is the EF-M series discussed above, and another is this RF system designed for Canon full-frame mirrorless cameras. The main difference between the two mirrorless lenses depends on “flange focal distance.” EF-M mount lenses show a flange focal distance of 18mm, whereas RF mount mirrorless lenses show a flange focal distance of 20mm.

CONCLUSION

That was about my picks of the top Canon lenses. We see that the price of every lens varies depending upon various factors like IS, metal/plastic mount, sharpness, aperture, and maximum focal range. So while you choose a Canon lens for yourself, make sure you select having all these in your mind. Thank you for reading. Great day!
